Hugh Webb Merit Award 2019 - Henry Davies

Our friends at the Bigfoot Cycle Club (the adult cycle club) have kindly donated us an award, the Hugh Webb Merit Award, awarded each year to one young rider in our club in recognition of their outstanding achievement or contribution. Many nominations were received in particular for young riders taking part in races and for volunteering – indeed one had ridden up one of the Tour de France mountain climbs! This year five young riders were shortlisted and invited to the Bigfoot CC Christmas party to see who had won. First let's tell you about the short listed riders:

Eleanor Thompson

Her second year of being shortlisted. One of four riders taking part in more regional races than others in our club. She came 2nd in the South London Go-Ride Racing League race series, u10 girls; 1st in the Crystal Palace Crits race series and 3rd in the Spring in the Park race series. She was part of the Bromley London Youth Games team (riding against riders much older than her).

She has also done some Triathlons, along with hundreds at these events – firstly in July competing in the Trinity Triathlon TriStar1 Group - importantly for us being the fastest girl for cycling in her race category. Then in September, competing in the Hever Castle Triathlon, again the fastest girl for cycling in her race category.

Also for the second year she joined us and rode all the way from Hayes to Brighton, along with joining lots of other rides.

Eleanor is currently competing in the KinesisUK London and South East Cyclocross League and positioned in 4th place in the u10 Girls category at the moment. She complains that she doesn't like cyclocross and riding on wet grass but still gets up in the dark each Sunday morning to go out and represent the club. She must secretly love it!

Henry Davies

Starting at the club nearly 10 years ago, aged 8, Henry's membership of Bigfoot Youth is almost as old as the club itself. Over the years he's been an active participant at club sessions, off road rides, races and he has done our club ride to Brighton on many occasions.

In the last three years he has turned his attention to volunteering on Saturday mornings with our younger riders. Two years ago he trained to become a Level 1 British Cycling Coach, and he's a qualified first aider too.

Henry has been an incredibly regular volunteer over those years, with his first duty being to unlock the school grounds and set up riding courses (meaning certain adult coaches don’t have to get out of bed quite so early!)

Some quotes from those who know him - "Henry is always smiling and ready to help", "Despite lots of homework and other commitments Henry arrives bright and early to set up the course for Saturday sessions, he's smiley, helpful and a great young man", “thank you for your years of excellent volunteering, you are an essential and fantastic part of the Saturday morning team of volunteers – keep coming!”

Aaron Harris

Like Eleanor, he is one of the four riders taking part in more regional races than others in our club. Another racer – his successes are: 2nd in the South London Go-Ride Racing League race series, u12 boys; winning a race at the Cyclopark’s Spring in the Park series and going on to be 1st in the Crystal Palace Crits race series (in fact winning all of the final 6 races!); another member of the Bromley London Youth Games team, personally coming 2nd in the London Youth Games Time Trial. He also came 3rd place in the Bigfoot 10 mile time trial – youth – with a time of 27 minutes 16 seconds.

He is a regular and lively and fun member of our club’s Youth section, riding with us on Monday and Thursday evenings and, as voted for by his fellow riders, has just won a Jack Petchey Achievement Award. He is also a regular road rider, riding to Brighton on many occasions.

He is now going on to be sponsored by Panagua bikes, to support him in his future racing.

James Cook

Again, he is one of the four riders taking part in more regional races than others in our club. Another racer – 1st in the South London Go-Ride Racing League, u10 boys; 3rd in the Spring in the Park race series; and he managed a 4th place in the u10 support race at the Youth National Circuit Races at Hillingdon (racing against riders from as far afield as Manchester and Wales). Part of the Bromley London Youth Games team (riding against riders much older than him).

And on a track bike he has also reached the podium at two of the Hackney Primavera races held at the Lee Valley Velodrome.

He regularly attends club coaching sessions in all weathers, and volunteered to help with this year’s awards night. When not out racing or training, James is partial to riding on Zwift and has recently conquered the ‘Alpe du Zwift’. Twice. Keen, eh?

Albie Peate

The fourth of the riders taking part in more regional races than others in our club – riding in the very tough u16 category. Part of the Bromley London Youth Games team, top 10 finisher, u16 boys. 1st place in the Bigfoot 10 mile time trial – youth - best time 24 minutes 23 seconds. The fastest rider in Bigfoot Youth CC!

He is the youth rep on the club's committee and is often seen taking photos for the club.

He has been in the club 7 years, taking part in loads of racing and loads of riding – twice winner of the South London Go Ride Racing League race series; often rides with the adult club at level 2 or 3; has done our HOUR record averaging over 20mph; first rode to Brighton aged 9 and rode Brighton and back (110 miles) aged 12.

He has skill – he is really quite evil in the Box Game - hopping backwards and sideways on his bike, trapping and forcing out other riders. He is fun and he is enthusiastic.

But there can only be one winner and it is:

HENRY DAVIES

Congratulations!
