Race report: Spring in the Park round 2

5.30pm and it's Friday night so jump in the car and head for Gravesend.

Adam has been kind enough to pick up Jack on his way through and Jack is now on the phone to warn of heavy traffic on the M25. Decision time - do I head back to Orpington and take the motorway or follow the satnav through Catford and Eltham?

I arrived at Cyclopark just in time to see Lawrence Wilson and Aaron Harris red faced having just finished their races while the Under 12s lined up for the start of theirs. In the Under 12s Bigfoot Go-Ride was represented by Jack Harradine, Thomas Mogford and Albie Peate. Jack was out of the traps like a startled rabbit and hit the first corner in the lead, then proceeded to slide backwards. He rode a dogged race especially as it was his first of the season. Albie and Tom managed to get in each other's way but Tom pushed hard and by the end of the first lap was in the middle of the field with Albie 30 metres back. Having both raced at Crystal Palace on Tuesday and Cyclopark you can already see the improvement.

Our Under 14s tonight were Jo Harris, Sam Ward and Aaron Grover. This was only Aaron's second outing and there was great improvement from the week before. Sam found his stride and had his best race to date - a tough performance in a very tough race. Jo had a poor start which in this company means you are going to be left behind as this group takes no prisoners! A good effort a round and general improvement in fitness. Well done boys.

The Under 16s seem to get bigger and bigger and so does the field. A good start is imperative. Ifran jumped off the line but Alex needs to focus on this aspect of the race as I believe that if he could get in the bunch he has the strength and determination to stay there. Ollie Robinson (last week's winner) tried to go off the front at about the 3/4 mark but was quickly reeled in by a very well-drilled bunch, with an exceptional VCL rider keeping everyone on their toes. An uphill sprint finish is always exciting and as they entered the straight there were about eight riders spread across the track. Ollie went early, Ifran and the other riders responded and the VCL rider turned on the afterburner and crossed the line convincingly with more in the tank.

Already looking forward to next week. Thanks to Cyclopark and all the organising team for another great nights racing.
